Hand Sanitiser Recipe – Gel or Spray?

There is a nervous feeling at the moment with the uncertainty of how severely Corona Virus will impact Australia. While we keep being reassured it is not time to “panic” it definitely can’t hurt to be more vigilant with our personal hygiene. The best way to stay clear of any germs hanging around is to avoid them in the first place. How do we do this?  It’s pretty simple – keep your hands clean! While it is not always convenient to wash your hands sufficiently it is easy to make up a small bottle with our hand sanitiser recipes that you can keep in your handbag, drawer at work or the car.

Firstly you need to decide on whether to make a hand sanitiser gel or spray? It is the great DIY divider! Speaking for myself I love a gel. But I know plenty of you swear by making a DIY hand sanitiser spray.

ByMe has all your bottle needs covered with 50ml & 100ml pharmaceutical grade amber glass bottles that can be purchased with either a fine mist sprayer or gel pump. Finally give your bottles the designer look by labelling them with our removable and re-usuable static cling vinyl decals.

DIY Hand Sanitiser Spray – Alcohol Based

UPDATE 18/3/2020: To be honest I have to date been more worried about chemicals in my house and on my skin than germs. But given the current situation of Carona Virus I want those germs dead! The World HealthOrganisation states that:

At present, alcohol-based handrubs are the only known means for rapidly and effectively inactivating a wide array of potentially harmful microorganisms on hands.
(Guide to Local Production: WHO-recommended Handrub Formulations)

From my research the two best types of alcohol to use are ethanol or isopropyl alcohol due to the high alcohol content – you are looking for as high as you can find, definitely over 70%. Currently unfortunately what you use will be dictated by what you can get. I am using ethanol because that it what I have been able to get my hands on.

Full disclosure here, I am not a chemist and I am only sharing this recipe as an example of what I have decided is the best and safest line of defence for me. Absolutely do your own research. And remember, Hand Sanitiser is the next best option to washing your hands with soap and water and drying them properly. Isn’t it great that the most effective way to kill the Caronavirus is actually low-tox!

Ingredients

30 mls ethanol (or isopropyl alcohol)
15 mls water (ideally filtered or boiled and cooled)
1/2 teaspoon aloe vera gel (optional – to add some moisture)
10 drops essential oils (I am using On Guard, I would also recommend tea tree)
Based on A 50ml bottle, adjust accordingly

Instructions

  1. In a small spray bottle, combine the water, aloe vera gel and essential oils. Place the sprayer on tightly and shake well to combine.
  2. Add the ethanol with water. Replace sprayer, and shake again.
  3. Pour into amber glass bottle (a small funnel will help with this).
  4. Complete your bottle with a mini decal Hand Sanitiser label in black or white.

Find your bottles and decals in the ByMe store.
