//Using essential oils to clean your home

The power of essential oils have been known for thousands of years.  In fact modern day scientists are starting to consult ancient texts to find natural solutions to the superbugs today that are resistant to antibiotics and modern chemicals.  Essential oils really are natures own remedy and I believe that they can replace many of those chemical based solutions we reach to in our daily lives without even thinking about the side effects.

Because essential oils are antimicrobial and kill bacteria naturally without the dangerous side effects they are a great addition to your cleaning mixtures.  Not only do they kill bacteria, germs, fungi, and mold, but they will also leave your home smelling amazing and might even act as a mood enhancer along the way.

My favourites include:

  • all the citrus family (wild orange, lemon, grapefruit) to cut through grease – excellent for sticky handprints on windows!
  • Lavender oil is wonderful in anything. It is antiseptic and a de-toxifier and also provides a natural pick-me-up.
  • Of course TEA TREE OIL is Australia’s greatest natural antiseptic. If you aren’t a fan of the strong scent balance it out with LAVENDER and the combination will promote relaxation.
  • With winter coming up and colds and flus all over the place I am using a lot of doTERRA’s OnGuard blend which combines wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary.  Basically it is a tailor made germ buster. I use it in my bathroom spray and also my all-purpose spray for door handles, counter tops etc.

Research and experiment to find your favourite blends! Here is a quick summary of the essential oils that have qualities that make them perfect for cleaning.

ANTIBACTERIAL:  cypress, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, lime, marjoram, melaleuca, peppermint, Roman chamomile, rosemary, sage, sandalwood, wild orange, wintergreen

ANTIVIRAL:  cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, melaleuca, oregano, sandalwood, thyme

ANTI-FUNGAL:  eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, melaleuca, patchouli, sage, sandalwood, thyme

ANTIBIOTIC:  bergamot, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, lime, melaleuca, oregano, patchouli, Roman chamomile.

Where do I get my essential oils from?  I get asked this a lot! I used to buy them from health stores but have since switched to using doTERRA. Before you purchase your essential oils make sure they are 100% pure. I was shocked to discover many of the ones I had in my cupboard were only about 10%.  doTERRA oils are 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils which means I only have to use a fraction of the amount.  They are incredibly potent.  This is great for when making up your own cleaners as too much oil can lead to blockages in your spray bottles.  You can purchase doTERRA oils through the ByMe Home online doTERRA store here.

There is no reason cleaning can't be beautiful!

The ByMe amber glass bottles are perfect for cleaning mixtures that contain essential oils.  Essential oils cause plastic to leach chemicals so glass is the safe and sustainable alternative.  The amber colour is to protect the properties of the essential oils.  I love the apothecary style bottles as they look gorgeous and my All-Purpose spray is always close to hand on my kitchen bench.

What essential oils do you use to clean your home? I would love to hear!
