How to Make Natural Dishwasher Tablets at Home (For Just 20 Cents Each)
If your dishwasher tablet habit is quietly draining your grocery budget — and filling your bin with plastic packaging every few weeks — this recipe is about to change things for you.
Four ingredients. One silicone mold. About 20 cents per tablet. And results that will genuinely surprise you.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate)
  • 1 cup Baking Soda (Sodium bicarbonate)
  • 1/2 cup Citric Acid
  • 1/2 cup Castile Soap (scented/unscented with essential oil)
  • *Optional Lemon Essential Oil 20 drops for scent and extra degreasing power

Method

  • Mix your dry ingredients (washing soda, baking soda, citric acid) in a bowl.
  • Add liquid castile soap slowly and combine — the mixture should clump when pressed.
  • Press firmly into each cavity of the mold.
  • Leave to set and harden for 24–48 hours at room temperature.
  • Flex the mold to pop out your finished tablets.
  • Store in an airtight container and use one per dishwasher load.

Why Make Your Own Dishwasher Tablets?

Let’s be honest — most of us have never stopped to read the ingredient list on a commercial dishwasher tablet. They’re full of synthetic surfactants, artificial fragrances, chlorine bleach compounds, and a long list of chemical stabilisers designed more for shelf life than for your family’s health or your local waterway.
And for the privilege of all those mystery ingredients, you’re paying anywhere from 50 cents to over a dollar per tablet.
There’s a better way.
Homemade dishwasher tablets have been quietly gaining traction in the zero-waste and low-tox communities for good reason — they work, they’re cheap, and you know exactly what’s in them. Once you make your first batch, the idea of going back to store-bought feels a bit absurd.

What’s in These Tablets?

This recipe uses just four simple, natural ingredients — each one doing a specific, important job:
Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) The heavy-lifting cleaner. Washing soda is a powerful alkaline compound that breaks down grease, baked-on food, and general grime. It’s the backbone of this recipe and the reason these tablets genuinely clean — not just rinse.
Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) A gentler companion to washing soda, baking soda adds mild abrasive action, helps neutralise odours, and softens the overall formula so it’s not too harsh on your dishwasher or glassware over time.
Citric Acid This is the secret weapon for sparkling results. Citric acid dissolves limescale and mineral deposits, prevents that cloudy film that builds up on glasses, and acts as a natural rinse aid. If you’ve ever struggled with hard water leaving marks on your dishes, citric acid is your answer.
Castile Soap A pure, plant-based liquid soap made from vegetable oils, castile soap brings surfactant action to the blend — helping to lift and suspend grease and food particles so they rinse cleanly away. It binds the mixture together and gives your tablets their structure.
Together, these four ingredients cover every stage of a proper wash cycle: alkaline cleaning power, degreasing, limescale prevention, and surfactant action. No fillers, no synthetics, no compromises.
